The fact that theylaugh suggests that laughter has been around for a lot longer than we have. There is no doubt that laughing typically involves groups of people.

Men tend to laugh longer and harder when they are with other men, perhaps as a way of bonding. Women tend to laugh more and at a higher pitch when men are present, possibly indicating flirtation or even submission.

He points out that the masters of laughing are children, and nowhere is their talent more obvious than in the boisterous antics, and the original context is play. The question is: does this pant laughter have the same source as our own laughter? New research lends weight to the idea that it does. The findings come from Elke Zimmerman, head of the Institute for Zoology in Germany, who compared the sounds made by babies and chimpanzees in response to tickling during the first year of; their life.

Using sound spectrographs to reveal the pitch and intensity of vocalizations, she discovered that chimp and human baby laughter follow broadly the same pattern. Zimmerman believes the closeness of baby laughter to chimp laughter supports the idea that laughter was around long before humans arrived on the scene.

More distantly related primates, including gorillas, laugh, and anecdotal evidence suggests that other social mammals can do too. Scientists are currently testing such stories with a comparative analysis of just how common laughter is among animals. So far, though, the most compelling evidence for laughter beyond primates comes from research done by Jaak Panksepp from Bowling Green State University, Ohio, into the ultrasonic chirps produced by rats during play and in response to tickling.

One idea is that laughter and tickling originated as a way of sealing the relationship between mother and child. Another is that the reflex response to tickling is protective, alerting us to the presence of crawling creatures that might harm us or compelling us to defend the parts of our bodies that are most vulnerable in hand-to-hand combat.

But the idea that has gained the most popularity in recent years is that laughter in response to tickling is a way for two individuals to signal and test their trust in one another. This hypothesis starts from the observation that although a little tickle can be enjoyable, if it goes on too long it can be torture. In spanish class, my teacher had me read something out loud, and being white, I mispronounced something by accident that was apparently a word I was supposed to know.

You can help your case and foster goodwill by being as candid and open as possible with your customers. We do, and so do other customers. However, I appreciate the fact that anyone writing a review is taking time out of their busy schedule to benefit the overall community. You just need to make sure your offer is for writing a review, not just for writing a good review.

Bombarding customers under the age of 30 with requests to post a review will probably turn them off. However, if you have older or less social media savvy customers, they may need a little more prompting or hand-holding.

While a positive review is great for your business, the real value lies in the reviewer. That person took the time to describe and share the great experience they had with your business. Think about how you can further leverage this relationship. For example, you can produce video testimonials from your top customers to post on your website. Nothing tells a story better than well-produced, sincere video clips from real people. At the end of the day, the best path to having great reviews is to offer a great product and customer experience.

Checking consumer reviews has become a key part of choosing a local business, with more consumers than ever turning to the internet for help with everyday decisions. These incremental increases suggest consumers are seeking out local businesses more than ever. Nearly every consumer now conducts regular local searches, placing expectations on businesses to be visible online. Some businesses can struggle to differentiate from their competitors, so a positive online reputation is useful to help customers make a choice.

Restaurants, hotels and medical providers again lead the pack as the sectors in which most reviews are read. Here we see a clear correlation between regularity of service use and review-reading. How often we need to find a good nearby restaurant, grocery store or bar far outweighs the frequency that we need locksmiths, accountants and chiropractors, for example. The use of tablets and mobiles to read reviews has increased every year.

With Yelp attracting 40. While it leads in monthly traffic, there is still some work to be done to cement it as the trusted source of second opinions. This will likely come as Google puts more emphasis on encouraging business owners to collect reviews and consumers to leave them.See his Wikipedia article for more information.

Drawing on Construal Level Theory, we propose that increases in construal level facilitate the use of information from past experience, and thereby increase prediction accuracy.

This proposal was tested in two studies examining predictions of personal spending. Consistent with the hypotheses, individuals induced to construe the prediction target at a higher level of abstraction generated more accurate predictions (Study 1) and the effect of increased construal level on prediction was attributable to a greater reliance on past experience (Studies 1 and 2).

The findings indicate that high-level construal can sometimes benefit prediction accuracy. Predictions spanning one year for British overseas and independent territories, the South Atlantic and Gibraltar are also available.

By Joel BeallNovember 14, 2017Amazingly, the fall season is already coming to a close. The eight-event campaign wraps up this week with the RSM Classic in Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

At first glance, past editions of the tournament (formerly the McGladrey) tout winning scores hovering around 15 under.

While that figure seemingly falls in line with other PGA Tour contests, Sea Island's Seaside coursewhere three of the four tournament rounds are heldweighs in as a par 70. The southern property is very conducive to low scores, and the players have taken advantage of the lowered defenses. What's facilitated past success at the RSM Classic. Simple: getting it done around the dance floors. Last year's winner, Mackenzie Hughes, paced the field with a 1.

That runner-ups Billy Horschel, Camilo Villegas, Henrik Norlander and Blayne Barber all turned in similarly solid efforts with the flat stick show this is one of the few events where "drive for show, putt for dough" holds true.

The professor, however, tends to favor a more aggregated approach in his picks. Kisner is a safe and smart pick, winning the event in 2016 with a T-4 in 2015 further boosting his case.

Kisner hasn't made an appearance this fall, but did turn in a strong display at the Tour Championship (T-3) and played an integral part in the American blowout at Liberty National. But there are a few picks that raise some eyebrows.

Though Zach Johnson is a Saint Simons native, his outings at this event are mostly forgettable, missing the cut four times in seven tries. His best finish, a T-12, came in 2010. Johnson has been good this fall (T-13 at the Safeway Open, T-23 last week) and does have the short-game dexterity to thrive. Nevertheless, the iffy track record gives us pause.Previous predictions Access the collection of previous TMT Predictions. But what does 2018 have up its sleeves for Apple fans. Well, here at Macworld we've donned our prognostication hats, investigated every rumour and trend we could find, all to bring you our predictions for 2018.

Let's start with a really quick overview of what's happened in 2017. It's been busy, that's for sure. In January, Apple released its first updates of the year, but these were software. The company made big improvements to its music apps Garageband and Logic Pro X. Then, in March of 2017, Apple hosted an event to show off a few new products that it had been keeping up its sleeve:In June, at WWDC 2017, Apple had several major announcements to share with us.

As expected, Apple unveiled macOS High Sierra and iOS 11 (we share more information on those below), but more of a surprise were the following from the company:Apple also teased the launch of a new Mac Pro, which is expected in 2018. The updated Macs and iPads are available now, but we talk more about the all new iMac Pro and HomePod here, as well as the upcoming Mac Pro model.

Then on 12 September, in another special event we saw updates to the iPhone, Apple Watch and Apple TV, as well as final versions of iOS 11 and High Sierra.

The star of the show, though, was undoubtedly the 10th anniversary iPhone X, with its brand-new virtually full-screen OLED design. Many had anticipated that Apple would upgrade the iPhone SE model to the iPhone SE2 or SEs in March 2017, replacing the existing (and rather popular) SE that was introduced in March 2016. However the iPhone SE was only treated to a bump in storage to 32- and 128GB on 21 March. We do still expect a new iPhone SE model at some point in the future. When the new model launches it is likely to keep the existing, classic design, but feature upgraded internals such as the A10 chip found in the iPhone 7 and a more powerful camera.

To be honest we've got no idea what the follow up to the iPhone X is going to be called, but this guess is as good as any. We're not convinced this would be wise (the X already has the biggest screen Apple has ever put on a phone), but the market usually gets what the market wants.

We'd also love it if Touch ID could make a comeback in addition to Face ID.

Codehs quiz answers

This would be possible if Apple can incorporate a fingerprint scanner under the glass, something which was too technologically challenging in 2017 but may be feasible now. After the tremors of 2017, however, Apple may well consolidate in 2018, offering incremental upgrades and perhaps spreading existing features to more models - giving the 4.

However, this was not the iPad mini 5 anticipated, and given that the iPad mini 4 was last updated in September 2015, it's clear that Apple isn't too focused on its smaller tablets and Apple does state that the most popular tablet size is 9. Perhaps spring 2018 will see the introduction of an iPad Mini Pro with upgraded components, a new thinner, tougher aluminium chassis, and the inclusion of a Smart Connector to match that of the other iPad Pro devices.

Read more: iPad mini 5 new feature rumours iOS 11 was released to the public on 19 September 2017. Like iOS 12 - and Apple's other major OS updates - watchOS 5 will first be unveiled in the summer of 2018, before a public launch in autumn. Unlike the others, however, watchOS 5 probably won't be made available in the form of a public beta.

We suspect that this may be the first watchOS update that won't be able to run on every Apple Watch model, after seeing our first-gen Apple Watch struggle with the watchOS 4 update in 2017. Following its usual pattern, Apple will reveal and demo macOS 10. The last and least heralded of Apple's OSes, tvOS is nevertheless a Pretty Big Deal for everyone with a fourth-gen or 4K Apple TV. But we've since been informed that it won't make its debut until 2018.

Designed in response to the likes of Google Home and Amazon Echo, HomePod is a smart speaker that also sounds brilliant. Apple focused more on sound quality than its smart features in the unveiling of the HomePod, which is an interesting take on things but perhaps we'll discover more about Siri's role in the new device as we approach its release date.

Discover more about the HomePod here. Brand new to the Mac line-up is the iMac Pro, which Apple unveiled at WWDC 2017. It isn't out yet, but Apple still maintains that it will be launched before the end of 2017. The stunning new device is the most powerful Mac ever made, and it's still a sleek all-in-one like the iMacs we know.
